The Pine Beatles at Breckenridge Spring Fever

The Breckenridge, Colorado local bluegrass band "The Pine Beatles" rocked Breckenridge Ski Resort's Spring Fever concert series. Stepping it up and playing a full set after the scheduled bluegrass band, Chicago-based Cornmeal got stuck in an epic blizzard that shut down I-70 for hours, The Pine Beatles played through the snow even with frigid fingers. EXTREME WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY!

Jess & Brian had the kind of wedding that I love shooting... low-key, small, casual. They had originally planned to elope and just have me photograph the intimate event, but compromised with their family to have a small gathering so they could be part of it. Ultimately, there were about ten people present. The Denver-based couple will have a celebration reception and party near Chicago this summer, but wanted the intimate part of the affair to be a bit more, well, intimate.

The wedding was held at the Allaire Timbers Inn in Breckenridge, Colorado. Jessica & Brian signed the marriage certificate, then had their family sign around the border of the page, and I believed they exchanged rings and vows in private either before I arrived or way before I met them.

I loved the genuine nature of this event and this couple and was really happy to be a part of this day. For portraits, we wanted to get some shots in nature, but it was pretty hard to get into the snowy woods. Brian and Jess just happened to have snow shoes in their car and so did I! The newlyweds and the adventure sports photographer took off! We spent a bit shooting some extreme adventure photography before the two headed back to their family and weekend vacation. Photos of their wedding announcements to come!

Note: I've posted a lot of these pictures in black & white, or in de-saturated tones, just because, well, I was feelin' it for this one and this particular scene. But of course, I did give the couple all the original color digital files on a disc for them to keep!

Adventure! The bride and groom take off on snow shoes!

So, I found myself editing at about 2 in the morning one time and in my delirium I made the above photo into the below photo. Thoughts? Is this ever worth doing again? (Post comments below)

The Flobots at Spring Fever

The Denver-based group "The Flobots" performed at Breckenridge ski resort's new spring festival, "Spring Fever." It was a really beautiful and sunny day up on the mountain but a little difficult for lighting with the bright sun setting behind the stage and mountain. It was a great live show. Tons of fans and lots of energy. This show was shot for Vail Resorts and Breckenridge mountain.

My favorite shot of the day!

Family-friendly fun!

Erik Husman Music

My friend, former co-backcountry guide and now co-music maker Erik Husman asked me to shoot some portraits for his new album. "Archaeology of the Let Down" will be recorded live at the Walnut Room in Denver this Thursday, March 24, and yours truly will have a guest singing appearance on about 3 songs. Yay!
The Changing Colors from Manitou Springs, Colorado will be opening.
You can visit Erik's page on Facebook or listen to some music on his MySpace page.
This Golden, Colorado local defines his genre as "Western Freak Folk." Rock on, Erik.
Inspired by his music, we made some portraits that reflect an old-timey sound, melancholy mixed with celebration. I chose to desaturate some of my favorites and turn some to black and white to turn the viewers focus towards the emotion of the images, rather than the color. (Don't worry, purists. I also gave him all the originals in full color).

With the dog. Awww.

String Cheese Winter Carnival!

Last Saturday, I shot The String Cheese Incident's dress rehearsal for their Saturday night concert at the 1ST Bank Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado. Why shoot a dress rehearsal for a band, you ask? Because during the beginning of second set, they busted out with a crazy theatrical performance featuring aerialists, bungie jumpers and stilt walkers! That's right. You hear me. And yes, it was epic.
